About the Painting: “Eilean Donan”
Eilean Donan is a famous Scottish castle located in the North West Highlands of Scotland
and close to the Isle of Skye. Often, it is incorrectly referred as the Kyle of Lochalsh
and which is a few miles further away. This painting was completed in one sitting.
No brushes were used in this impasto painting; only one painting knife was used.
A much larger impasto work and entitled “Eilean Donan Castle” can be seen below “Pembroke
Castle Tower”.

“Pembroke Castle Tower”
Oil Pastel on Paper

(7.28 x 11.02 inches)
Price: GBP 60.00
About the Painting: “Pembroke Castle Tower”
Pembroke castle is a fine example of how well the Welsh preserve their historic monuments.
This particular castle was a formidable fortress and set in an excellent defensive
position. Much of it is still intact today. If you would like to see how an interior
part of this castle looks today, then you need to view the “Pembroke Castle Doorway”
painting under the Steps and Doorways page. I do have sketches of aerial perspectives
of Pembroke Castle following a flight over the castle a year or so ago. My intention
is to paint a couple more medieval castle paintings of Pembroke Castle as soon as
I can. Also I hold some smaller paintings of castles in stock so please contact me
if you are looking for something in particular.

About this Painting: “Eilean Donan Castle”
The Eilean Donan Castle is a famous Scottish fortress situated in the Western Highlands
quite close to the Isle of Skye. It is often misspelt as the Eileen Donan and sometimes
incorrectly referred as the “Kyle of Localsh”; which is a few miles further away.
To achieve my painting I used an Ultra Heavy Body Acrylic paint together with a painting
knife. No brushes were used at all. Also I used the colour straight from the tube
and with no pre-mixing. It took several weeks to finish as many layers were applied
to achieve a desired impasto effect. A smaller version of the Eileen Donan is shown
above.

Castle Paintings from the United Kingdom
Castle paintings UK is growing in castles! The four castle paintings shown on this
page include two variations of the same castle and are named as “Eilean Donan” and
“Eileen Donan Castle” in Scotland. The other two castles shown are “Pembroke Castle
Tower” and Carew Castle; both of these are in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Some medieval
castle interiors of steps and doorways have been painted too with the latest being
technically difficult to do as it involved a bird’s eye view of a medieval spiral
stone staircase; it is named as “Carew Castle Turret Steps”. I really do enjoy painting
castles and ruins in general and these are not limited to just those in the UK. I
have painted castles in Europe as well as classical ruins. However as there are so
many ruined castles within Wales and this is where I live, it makes sense to visit
those on my doorstep but it does take much time trying to get around all of the Welsh
medieval castles! Many of my castle paintings have been sold to private clients both
in the UK and overseas over the years. Although you will not see much of the castle
in my “Tenby” painting the composition you will see is surrounded within medieval
castle walls. A close up view of Tenby Harbour will show you principal buildings
from the Tudor times. These historic buildings are encased in Tenby’s medieval castle
walls too.
About the Painting: “Carew Castle”
This aerial view of Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire, Wales was achieved by flying over
it in a light aircraft. Fortunately, I was not the pilot! The green backdrop is actually
a river and not sky. A painting showing a part of the castle’s interior and entitled
Carew Castle Turret Steps will give you an idea of the castle’s solidity of construction.
A slight aerial perspective was used too for my “Welsh Cockerels on Patrol” painting.
This seemingly gives the picture much more depth.
